The International Day of Rural Women, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007, is observed annually on 15 October. This day acknowledges the crucial role and contributions of rural women, including indigenous women, in advancing agricultural and rural development, enhancing food security, and working towards the eradication of rural poverty.
Each year, Samburu Women’s Trust commemorates this special occasion to honor the resilience, dedication, and invaluable efforts of indigenous women in strengthening food systems within their communities. The focus is on eradicating poverty, fostering climate adaptation, and developing mitigation practices. The event brings together indigenous women from marginalized and indigenous regions of Kenya, as well as neighbouring countries such as Tanzania and Uganda. It provides a platform for these women to share their stories, challenges, and gaps in their efforts to combat poverty and address climate change.
The theme for this year’s observance on 15 October 2024 is, *”Rural Women Cultivating Good Food for All,”* highlights the essential role rural indigenous women and girls play in food systems and the positive impact of their struggles and efforts on the well-being of households and communities. Indigenous women make significant contributions to transforming agricultural food systems and livestock production.
Despite the numerous challenges rural indigenous women face—such as higher rates of poverty, unequal access to education, healthcare, social services, and employment opportunities—they continue to fight back with strength and determination. They are actively engaging in strategies to combat climate change, advocating for their households and communities.
